The class E-2 was to be held in the same room as that of Eudos. But there were spare rooms, and Olias was given an adjoining chamber for this particular class. No students had completed the prerequisites required to take this class full time, but Olias had no qualms with helping out students in need.

On the white board, Olias wrote:
RP Creation - Maintenance (Level E-2)

-Continuing an RP (DM)
-Introducing challenges, advancing storyline, NPCs
-Continuing an RP (player)
-Reacting to plot elements, players, and NPCs, advancing storyline, leading
-Reviving dead RPs
-Reasons why RPs die and why they are extremely hard to revive
-How to revive a dead RP (starting a new storyline at death of previous etc.)
-Chronology
-How to tie in events that occur at different times in order to create a more cohesive plot
-Taking risks
-How to change the plot by introducing an element of your own (may ruin another storyline)
-Unexpected dynamics
-UDs as a method of altering storyline
-UDs as a method of jumpstarting RPs
-Ending an RP
-How to end an RP effectively
-Setting the stage for follow up (sequel) RP

Until students were enrolled full time, Olias would offer help on any of the mentioned topics.

Coming in the class, Xitaro was greatly surprised to see Olias there. ''Well, it seem that you have finally found a place as teacher. You where doing good in the other class we where following but I didnt wanted to do double work. I'm really busy you know.'' He choosed a desk in front and installed himself comfortably, at least as much someone can on those desk.''Well, with what are we beginning....You know, its funny to be your first student''

Olias welcomed his former fellow student into the room, but his smile quickly faded.

"I've got to say Xitaro, I'm impressed with your determination, but I'm not so sure that this class is best for you. You like like you will be planning to complete this particular course the entire way, and for that you first need to complete the E-1 course. You're already enrolled in that course, and it will not be all too easy to complete. The Roleplay courses are far longer, more in depth, and more rigorous than the Character courses."

"I'm currently offereing tips and help to anyone who does not wish to enroll full time but is trying to create or maintain a roleplay. I will be working closely with you in E-1."

I am an experienced RPers creator and I dont think I need any particular help. I was here just to follow the class and be gone with it. It could be interesting to see if you have something of interest to show me throught the class, but, if you really want to see me finish the other class before starting this one, so be it.

Olias could not refrain from smiling.

"Experience or none, the level E courses are structured and rigorous. If you plan to complete the course and 'be done with it,' then I am sorry for you. By taking this and the previous courses, whether or not you learned from the instructors, you should have learned from and about yourself. This course is meant to hone your skills, and to complete it successfully, you must first find out what your skills are."

He had to lay aside his friendship for the betterment of Xitaro's roleplaying skills, and ushered his friend back into the E-1 room.

Xitaro had just about graduated from E-1, but Olias himself was about to take a short leave, as was Eudos. Olias pulled tight the separating wall that held the two rooms somewhat together, and locked it. On the wall be placed a notice:

Olias wrote:
E-2 Class Closed To Students Until March 1st.

Xitaro readed the notice, ''Well, look like more delay before I finish the academy, well look like I'll be sleeping here until they open the door.''

Olias returned to the classroom, removed his notice, and unlocked the sliding wall. With a heaving effort he reopened the wall door, and returned to his desk. The class was open to anyone and everyone, but he assumed that Xitaro would be his first student.

Hearing the door of the class opening, Xitaro awakened. At last, his last class, and the funny part of it, he will have Olias as instructor while they have followed each other through every other class.

He smiled but was still feeling groggy from a bad sleep on the floor of the academy corridor. He did some exercice to awake his body and mind then sat on one of the chair in the class.

''I'm ready for the first lesson''

Olias checked over his notes, and then launched into a short lecture.

"The first couple of lessons focus on continuing a roleplay. We will start by looking at the matter from the point of view of a dungeon master, who may or may not be participating as a playing character as well. Some things are ordained as the powers of the dungeon master, and so the DM must exercise them to further his or her roleplay."

He found a marker an wrote on the white board.

Olias wrote:
1. Challenges
2. Plotline Advancement
3. NPCs

"These three tools will elicit several kinds of reactions from your players, and all are meant to keep a player hooked. Allow me to ellaborate."

"Challenges are specific tasks given to players by the dungeon master that the players must complete on the microscale. For example, a challenge might be finding the way through a maze, slaying a dragon, solving a puzzle or answering a riddle, getting out of a tough situation, and many other situations. Challenges are often given when the players are hooked on the roleplay, and the DM wants to keep them as such."

Scanning his desk, Olias found a copy of a roleplay summary which we handed to Xitaro.

The summary wrote:
After a masterful introduction of a medieval fantasy setting, with magicians and swordsmen and warewolves and the like, the Dungeon Master has finally led his players into an enchanted library. He wishes to play off of their strengths and weaknesses and wants for them to cooperate to succeed. They are as follows: a Vince the Werewolf, Angela the Archer, Samuel the Swordsman, and Patrick the Pyromancer [fire mage].

All of the character have been separately tricked into pagan pacts with the denizen and caretaker of the library, a very powerful demon mage. The characters have all been given secret lists on the order in which they must kill each other, and the players do not know of their peer's intentions. They were all then brought into the library.

Olias explained the assignment.

"You will play the role of the dungeon master. This first assignment will consist of three parts, all of which must be submitted together. A good way to create challeneges for roleplay even outside of the classroom is with this step order."

He wrote the guidelines of the assignment on the board.

The board wrote:
1. Explain the basic premise of the challenge.
2. Explain the specific roles that the characters should play in the challenge.
3. Write an IC post to introduce the challenge.

"When IC, do not reveal too much of the challenge at one time. You may hint at certain aspects, but do not reveal your intentions. Keep in mind that during the course of the challenge, you will be intervening to detail the responses to characters' actions, to keep the challenge on track, or to help players out. Try to give the players a good starting point in the challenge. I look forward to reading your work."

Olias sat at his desk to go over the next two concepts, Plotline Advancement and NPCs to give Xitaro some time to work.

"If anything was unclear, please don't hesitate to ask questions. This is the first class that I am teaching here at the Academy, so I may be a little bit rusty."

1- Four character are brought into a mad game made by a powerful sorcerer. Its a labyrinth with deadly traps with a monster launched after them shortly after their departure.

2- One of them must be choosed to be the guide, one other to be the key and the two others will open the way. The one who is the key have to carry an heavy key as long as him, he will be slow so the two others may have to attract the monster to chase after them. The two others will have to run throughout the labyrinth to activate different switch that will open a way for the key holder. The labyrinth is full of traps designed to weaken the character in many ways: poisons, traps causing small bleeding wounds, burns and frozen spells... They can all talk to the guide but not between each other unless they are together in the labyrinth. The guide has an overview of the labyrinth and must guide the characters through it while sending them to activate switch and attract the monster away from the key holder while trying not to be cornered by it.

3- A mad sorcerer has captured you. He offer you the choice to try his labyrinth and maybe get out free and alive or to be the experiment of one of his many deadly spells. The choice isnt difficult so you choose to try is labyrinth.

''You have chosen my labyrinth, excellent! Now, you will have to choose a guide who will be someone that will be able to help you to pass through, you will also have to choose someone to be the key holder. When this will be done, we will start our little game...''

Olias took a minute to read Xitaro's work.

"It took me a few seconds to fully grasp your proposed challenge, but there is nothing fundamentally wrong with it. I like how you gave the characters the freedom to decide their own roles, without knowing what those roles entailed. Very nice job on noting the premise of the maze, and the key and guide positions without revealing too much. As long as you worked with this challenge and thought of interesting puzzles and problems within the maze, this challange would last you for a while."

He checked off the first assignment for Xitaro in his grade book, and returned to his desk for the next set of directions.

"Lets move forward. You have the challenge concept down, lets move onto Plotline Advancement. While challenges will keep your players hooked for a while, every challenge eventually ends, or becomes too tedious. Your next assignment will look at both of these situations."

"Let us consider the first, a natural end to your challenge. When your players have approached the end of your challenge, you might want to reward them with something, such as a piece of their overall quest, or items to help them on their travels, etc. You will then want to move your players into a new situation, perhaps an inn for them to discuss their lives and journeys over some ale, or into the next challenge, etc."

Olias wrote the directions on the board.

Olias wrote:
1a. Briefly describe an ending for your challenge, provided that your roleplay continues.
2a. Describe an interlude situation for character development.
3. Describe the next step of the story.

"This part of the assignment has no IC work, as I trust your IC capabilities. You will need to explain how your players succeed in solving the puzzle, describe what happens at their success, and how they are rewarded. Then, you will need to describe some situation to which your players move to after the challenge, where they may spend a few posts simply talking or roleplaying without all too much action. Lastly, you will describe a transition, either smooth or sharp, from the interlude into a new challenge. Use the roleplay I gave you earlier, and use your creative freedom to come up with an interesting course of events. Remember, the more intersting your roleplay is, the more likely your readers will be to continue playing it."

"Don't forgot that your players are cooperating, but are all trying to kill each other. You might want to describe how their avoid killing or getting killed."

He paused and gave Xitaro a chance to write his response. However, before he collected it he added another point onto the lecture.

"Now that you've written a natural plotline advancement, consider a slightly different situation. Let us say that your challenge was not recieved too well, and the players have gotten half way through it and have gotten bored. They aren't getting anywhere, and are posting much slower. The Roleplay is not dead yet, but you can feel it dying. You have to quickly end the challenge in an interesting manner, and hope that your players will enjoy the next situation."

Below the previous instructions on the board, Olias added two more clauses.

Olias wrote:
1b. Describe how you would abruptly end your challenge midway.
2b. Describe a transition you might use to move the character from the unfinished challenge into a character development situation.

"There are a couple of ways to end your challenge unnaturally. One would be to summarize the end of the challenge, and describing how the characters finished it. Another would be the Deus Ex Machina. Feel free to look up the definition and history of that term on your own time. The basic premise is that you simply intervene with something that was not foreshadowed or planned, such as an unexplicable explosion which gives the players an exit from the maze. Use your imagination, and decide how you want to interrupt the roleplaying to force the storyline forward."

Xitaro returned at his work satisfied to have succeeded the first task without too much trouble..

Quote:
1- Our heros have managed to reach the end of the labyrinth, they now stood in front of a big iron door with a giant sized keyhole made for the huge key. They where all very tired and eager to get out, so they all worked together to place the key inside the keyhole and unlock the door. The huge iron door opened revealing a vast green plains under a shining sun in a blue sky. They leaved quickly the mad labyrinth and runned far from it until exhaustion took them, they stumbled in the grassy plains and let a deep slumber took them.

2- Our heros awaken on the grassy fields many hours later. The morning sun is rising at the horizon and a new day is beginning. They began a long walk and reached the big city at the end of the day, they took some helathy care, a good bath and a very good meal.

3- Inside the tavern where they are enjoying their hard gained freedom. They hear a story about the mad sorcerer and its mad labyrinth. The heros learn that the sorcerer live inside a small tower near the capital city and that he should have a very big treasures gained from every people who died in his labyrinth. They didnt liked at all that a mad sorcerer played with them like playthings, and they knew that it was now time for them to be the puppeeters and play with the sorcerer.

Xitaro looked now at the second part of this second task. A way to end it abruptly? Easy He immediatly began his work.

Quote:
The heros where very tired, wounded and where going nowhere. The situation now looked more desperate by each moment. The monster who where runnning after them can be heard not far from them, the beast appeared in the corridor and charged them. A huge ball of fire appeared over them and blasted the monster in a fiery inferno and turned it to ashes. A magician in a blue robe with a shining staff has suddenly appeared behind them. ''I am a fierce enemy of the mad sorcerer, my magic is not strong enough to kill it but with your help we can all succeed if you accept to help me and end this once and for all, if not, I can teleport you far from here in a peaceful tavern and let others poor soul to fall in this mad labyrinth. The choice is yours...''

Xitaro finished his work and hoped that his instructor would be satisfied with his work. He thought that giving a chance for the players to avenge themselves could be interesting and give a new life to the challenge.

Olias cautiously entered the dark room. He brushed aside the cobwebs that embraced the thick curtains. Faint light was shining from the hall, and with it Olias found the left curtain, and pulled it to the side.

A searing flash illuminated the room and momentarily blinded Olias. The months he had spent trapped within the academy dungeon had done a terrible job on his eyesight. After a few painful moment of eye-rubbing adjustment, Olias blinked away the involuntary tears, and eyed his long abandoned room.

He had had only one student in that room, and placing the name wasn't all too hard. That was Xitaro, his class mate for all of the A-D classes, and then his student in E1 and E2. Olias's eyes wandered to Xitaro's old seat, and saw a slightly yellowed sheet of paper, filled with writings.

Must've been the very last assignment.

He picked it up and read it, mumbling to himself.

"...Hmm... Perhaps a bit too abrupt in the first section. Those should be a more flowing, more fitting, perhaps a condensed explanation of the actual end to the challenge. But he had it down with the followup challenge... I should think this roleplay would succeed..."

"...As for the second portion, he has the Deus Ex Machina down very well. While the machine of god isn't a good idea in personal writing, it is a plausible technique to keep the interest of participants and readers. The sorcerer's appearance could actually be used as a great twist and he could in fact be the enemy..."

Olias marked the work with an A for old time's sake. He doubted that it would ever get back to Xitaro, but the later had well mastered the basics or roleplay maintenance so far. Some light and noise awakened Xitaro. He has stumbled in a state of hibernation in one of the corner of the class. Now someone has awakened him.

''Is it you, Olias??'' His eyes where blurred and his body was very slow to respond. He awakened completly his body and stood up again after many month of sleep. some cobwebs was covering his body and a good layer of dust. Xitaro brushed himself clean and returned to his desk.

''I'm ready for the next task!''
